Biography of Professor Tyler L Adams
Tyler L. Adams (born on August 8, 1968 in Fort Smith, Arkansas) is an American expatriate scholar and administrator whose research focuses upon new communication technologies, Internet studies, and the history of communication theory. Adams received his Doctorate in Philosophy in Communication from The Florida State University in 1995, his Masters of Science in Communication from The Florida State University in 1992, and his Bachelors in Speech Communication from the University of Florida in 1990. It should also be noted that Adams was a Visiting Scholar of Free Expression Theory and Common Law at Saint Benet’s Hall within Oxford University in 1997.
Adams currently serves as Editor in Chief of the online multimedia World Complexity Science Academy Journal. He was also Editor of the American Communication Journal from 1997-2000. Adams is the Dean of Media and Mass Communication at the American University in the Emirates located in the International Academic City of Dubai. Adams is best known for his studies on the impact of nanotechnology in modern computer circuit design, and the social implications derived from advances in Internet communication technologies. Adams has published nearly 40 journal articles and book chapters on these topics.
Adams books include: Rogue Operative: Peruvian Cocaine, the CIA, Shining Path, and Iranian Intelligence which is an audio book that documents his personal experiences of being a CIA covert informant; Communication Shock: The Rhetoric of New Technology co-authored with University of Arkansas Professor Stephen A. Smith; Electronic Tribes: The Virtual World of Scammers, Shamans, and Gamers on The University of Texas Press; Internet Effectively: A Beginner’s Guide to the World Wide Web which is an Internet literacy textbook by Addison-Wesley; and The Foundations of Nanotechnology (in Spanish) on the University of San Martin de Porres Press in Lima, Peru.
Adams has been a Dean of Continuing Education and Lifelong Learning at the University of the Bahamas in Nassau (2018-2019); a Distinguished Foreign Visiting Professor at Monterrey Institute of Technology in Toluca, Mexico (2017-2018); a Visiting Professor of Communication at the historically-black Fayetteville State University (2016-2017); a Professor of Mass Communication at the Gulf University of Science and Technology in Mishref, Kuwait (2015-2016); a Vice Dean of Academic Affairs at the Jeddah College of Advertising with the University of Business and Technology in Saudi Arabia (2014-2015); a Da Vinci Fellow of Strategic Communication at Gabrielle D’Annunzio University in Pescara, Italy (2013); and was a U.S. Department of State Cultural Affairs Division Fulbright Specialist in Almaty, Kazakhstan at the Kazakhstan Institute of Management, Economics, and Strategic Research University (2011), where he also served the institution as Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs (2011-2012). Prior to these international appointments, Adams was the D’Aquin Endowed Professor of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette (1998-2013), where he also served a Graduate Studies Director. His first academic appointment was at the University of Arkansas at Monticello as Assistant Professor (1993-1998).
